Tutoring
Our mission at Avenue Family Center is to break the cycle of poverty, and a key in doing that is helping students achieve success in school. Therefore, the primary service that we offer is AFC Tutor.
AFC Tutor - We are currently offering two levels of tutoring assistance. Each one is tailored to the different levels of need that different students have. Both of them have several aspects in common.
- The grade range is Kindergarten through college graduation, regardless of the age.
- There is no cost and no qualifying income or grades.
- Assistance is offered in all subjects, including several foreign languages.
- All tutors undergo a background check prior to interacting with students.
Individual Tutoring
Individual tutoring is one-on-one tutoring assistance that is ongoing. Once a student is paired with a tutor, the relationship is established and the two will work together for the duration of the student's participation in AFC's tutoring program.
Once the tutor and student are matched, the times, locations, and frequency of the tutoring sessions are between the tutor, the student, and the student's family to decide. Possibilities for locations range from the student's home to the library to a fast food restaurant. Any place that is suitable for the tutor, student and student's family will work.
Group Tutoring
Group tutoring happens when there are several students whose needs are similar. Either there are several students who all need help with the same subject, or several students just need a little tutoring assistance on a regular basis, but not enough to warrant a regular tutoring session.
We have not yet had any demand for a tutoring group, but when we have sufficient interest, we will form one. It will meet once per week and the requirements for it will depend on the type of group it is. For the same subject groups, it would meet once per week and would require students to attend and participate in the group for the entire session. For the group of students who just need a little bit of regular homework assistance, the group would be open attendance. Students would be encouraged to come and get the assistance they needed and then would be free to leave.
